Yes, as you journey through life, what is really important to your Quality of Life as you grow older? What is it that will allow you to savor every moment of your life now, and your life to come? Whether by design or by chance, the secret is that your path in life so far has primed you for Longevity and Quality of Life for the future.
Of course, in childhood, through my teens, and even through the military years, I had no concept of having ‘Quality of Life’ in my 50s and beyond, I had no thought for that. Yet, by the start of my foray in Triathlons, I was primed to pursue the proverbial ‘Fountain of Youth’, like the Knights of yore!
As the years along my Triathlon career progressed, and I enjoyed limitless health and performance, the seed of forever keeping that feeling took hold. I started exploring the physical pursuits and mental mindset that would allow me to retain this ability for evermore.
Looking back on the succeeding decades of my life, I have a pretty good handle on what has allowed me to have that luxury. It is all listed in my ‘About>Claude’ tab. Review it if you need a refresher, and definitely read it if your haven’t; then you’ll know precisely what lifelong pursuits have landed me where I am today.
What’s really been important to me for the past four decades now is the defining behaviors that dictate the pleasure of my daily life. And what are these overwhelming criteria? There are many, but they can neatly fit in the following concept:
For me, the umbrella concept is to be able to be mobile, with clarity of mind, in my 90s and beyond, just as I was in my 30s. At whatever stage of your Journey you find yourself, that is what I wish for you, and what GoingOn30 will help you achieve through my posts, articles, podcasts, and daily life.
Below, is what I define as the requisite ‘PILLARS’ of thriving through future decades:
- At 90 years of age and beyond, I want to be pain-free, and move with the same ease, agility, range of motion, and general zest for physical endeavors I had when I was 30.
The above is non-negotiable, it is a prime universal requirement to lead a life of physical bliss. Below is a personal list of what I plan for my Journey. Feel free to substitute the activities that have meaning in your life:
- At 90 years old, I want to be able to walk, run, swim, ski, scuba, skate, lift weights, SUP, kayak, and jump out of planes and land on a Drop Zone standing up.
In the mental/cognitive arena, the ‘ PILLAR’ cornerstone is the following:
- At 90 years of age, I want to have the clarity of thought I had when I was 30, I want to be able to formulate thoughts and intricate behaviors that necessitate reflection and conclusions. I want that critical mindset so necessary to evaluate, process, and manage myself as I move through life.
As with the physical arena, the above is non-negotiable. The mind paired with a ‘fluid’ body will create the lifestyle we all desire as we grow older. Just as the physical arena above, I have a list of specific behaviors I’d like to achieve as these have been part of my life up until now as well. Again, feel free to substitute your own list:
- At 90 and beyond, I want to find my way with compass on a map when hiking, give a speech, play chess, learn a new language, and of course, remember where I put things! I want to be able to follow instructions and assemble furniture, and if there are no instruction, figure out how the pieces fit together!
These are some of the most prominent goals that keep me motivated to achieve such things at all stages of my life, at 90 and beyond. Yes, in a nutshell, this is what is important to enjoying my life as it unfolds before me. Perhaps, some of these are the same you would like for yourself, so keep reading!
GoingOn30 will steer you in the right direction. I and it will be around in my 70s, 80s, 90s, and beyond.
When you follow this site, overtime you’ll get to see how I use diet in conjunction with training, how I train, how much I train, the interests I have, and how I continually stimulate my brain, (another extremely critical muscle). Basically, you’ll just have an insight on my daily life, both successes and set backs. You will peek over my shoulder and see how I do it. Nothing will be held back!
So far, 66 and counting, I’ve done a rather exceptional job, if I may say so myself:) Others say so as well, but I’m not patting myself on the back quite yet!
Anyway, I hope you will follow my many adventures, it might just give you another insight and lend context to what might work for you in your life.
I plan to be my own ‘Blue Zone’ wherever I find myself in time or in the World. I hope I can positively influence you in some small, minuscule way. Here’s to the next 40 or 50 years.
Journey well my Friends,
Claude.
